Art Class

Kindergarten

The kindergartens are becoming comfortable and confident in the art room. They are exploring line, a fundamental element of art.  They are learning to draw a variety of lines and practicing repeat as a design element.  They are having lots of fun practicing with new art tools that include oil pastel, watercolor and permanent markers.

First and Second Grade

The first and second graders are creating jazzy jungle cats.  The students have examined jungle paintings by Henri Rousseau and drawn their own decorative lions using a variety of lines and shapes.  Next, they will paint the lions with watercolor and then design  jungle plants with tempura paint.  Finally, the cats and jungle plants will come together in original compositions when the students glue the pieces together as a collage.

Third and Fourth Grade

The third and fourth graders are creating beautiful still-life compositions.  The students have examined still life paintings by Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne and then drawn their own flower vases.  They enjoyed  using glue as their drawing tools and are having a lot of fun using colored chalk to fill in the empty spaces.  Finally they will use a brayer to roll black tempura paint over the glue lines.

Fifth and Sixth Grade

The fifth  and sixth graders are working on abstract art.  The students have examined abstract compositions by  Wassily Kandinsky (the first artist to achieve abstract language).   They have created non-objective backgrounds by painting a network of random lines on black construction paper.  They are in the process of adding colored chalk to the black spaces.  Next, they will draw an abstract animal using similar line networks and colored chalk ( a new medium for these students).  Finally, the students will combine the nonobjective background and animal to create  unique abstract compositions with depth.

Seventh and Eighth Grade

The seventh  and eighth graders are working on a color study through the principles of design.  All students have been successful creating unique compositions within assigned parameters that include a variety of lines and shapes.  They will study the color wheel in depth and have multiple experiences mixing color.

Art History

Sixth Grade

Sixth graders are learning about ancient cave art.  Next, they will simulate the cave painting experience in order to create a class mural.

Seventh Grade

Seventh graders are exploring the history of art in America.  They are viewing the PBS American Visions series and will be writing about and creating Power Point presentations on their favorite American artists.
