The kindergarten
curriculum at St. Aloysius School is one that educates the whole
child. Each child’s academic, social, emotional, physical, and
spiritual growth is addressed.
The information listed in this Curriculum section will help you
understand what your
child will be learning throughout the year and how their education
program
is structured.

Religion lessons are taught daily. The series used in
kindergarten is “We Believe” from Sadlier. Throughout this
series, students will come to know that God made the world out
of love for us. They will meet several saints and learn
about Mary, Joseph, and Jesus. Students will learn about
the liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter.
In addition to religion class, students will attend an
All School Mass every Tuesday at 8:20 am. You are welcome to
join our class and sit with your child as we celebrate mass
together. It is preferred that students remain seated with the
class since this is our time to worship together as a class. |

In
reading, kindergarteners will study ten themes throughout the
year. Reading instruction is divided into three main
categories: Learning to Read, Word Work, and Writing/Language.
In Learning to Read lessons, students will work on
phonemic awareness and phonics, sight words, and comprehension
skills and strategies. Students will be introduced to the
letters and their sounds through Alpha Friends.
In Word Work lessons, students have the opportunity to
practice sight words and explore word families. The sight words will be
displayed on our classroom Word Wall. These words will be
taught in class throughout the year and will be sent home on a
Word Ring (a flashcard tool) for you to practice with your
child.
In Writing and Language lessons, students practice oral
language, listening, and speaking. Students will have many
opportunities and mediums to write. The writing curriculum
includes shared writing, guided writing, independent writing,
journaling, predictable charts, and a free choice writing
center. The use of inventive spelling is highly encouraged at
this age and grade level. Students are encouraged to use the
print-rich classroom as a writing tool. Revisions and
corrections will be encouraged only if the child can find the
correct spelling from a classroom source, such as the Word Wall.

Saint Aloysius School
uses the D’Nealian method in teaching handwriting. This is a
continuous stroke method that slants slightly to the right. It
is useful in helping children transition from manuscript print
to cursive writing. |
|

|
The
Kindergarten philosophy for math instruction is that students
learn math concepts best through hands-on experiences with
concrete objects. This method actively involves students in the
learning process. Therefore, most of the math instruction
students receive will be through learning centers. We will be
studying the following units: Positions, Comparing, Sorting and
Classifying, Patterns, Shapes and Geometry, Numbers, Time,
Money, Fractions, Measurement, Addition, and Subtraction.
|
|

|
Our Science
and Social Studies themes will tie into our Reading themes or
seasonal/holiday celebrations. Some of these themes
include: Weather, Fairy Tales, Seasons, Animals, Five Senses,
Families, and Celebrations. |
|

|
In addition
to the core subjects your child is being taught, St. Aloysius
offers a variety of “special classes” in order to enhance your
child’s learning experience. These classes include P.E., Art,
and Music. Your child will attend one special class a day.
Children will also attend Computer class weekly.
