Kindergarten Screening will tentatively be held on May 29 in the
afternoon. If your child is registered to start
Kindergarten at St. Al's in the Fall of 2007 and does not
currently attend the St. Aloysius Pre-K, you will receive a
letter regarding your screening time!
Incoming kindergarten students will be
given a screening test called the DIAL-III. This test will
assess the child’s developmental skills (motor and concept) and
language skills. These skills are the foundation for academic
learning. This test will give the school information about how
the child uses his/her body (motor skills), knowledge of basic
concepts like counting and colors (conceptual skills), and
language. The child’s behavior during screening will also be
noted, i.e. Does he/she listen to directions? Was he/she
fidgeting? Does the child separate from parent?
The
DIAL-III student assessment provides a performance assessment of
the following:

After screening, your child will be returned to you, and you are
free to go. About two weeks after screening, you will receive a
letter regarding your child’s score. Most children will fall
within the expected developmental range for his/her age. If the
school has any concerns about your child’s performance at
screening, you will be asked to come in for a conference to
discuss readiness.
The
purpose of the screening is not to exclude children from
Kindergarten, but to help the school have a better idea of the
child’s development. At screening, parents will be given some
information about kindergarten readiness. This information will
help you and your child prepare for a year full of learning and
fun at Saint Aloysius School.
