Liturgical Ministries
Lector
Lectors are trained individuals who are scheduled to read the Scriptures at the Sunday liturgies. After an appropriate training with one of the Deacons the volunteer is put on the lectors’ schedule. Commitment to this ministry is usually for 3 years but may be easily extended. Anywho feel called to read for the assembly are encouraged to volunteer through a phone call to the parish office.
Extraordinary Ministers of the Eucharist
EMEs are trained individuals who are scheduled to help distribute the elements of Holy Communion at Mass on Sunday liturgies. After an appropriate training with one of the Deacons, the volunteer’s name is submitted to the diocese for commissioning by our bishop. They are then put on the EME’s schedule. Commitment to this ministry is usually for 3 years but may be extended by resubmitting your name to the bishop.
The EME’s ministry may extend to other places within the parish. In order to bring communion to hospitals, shut-ins, or home-bound the minister must be a commissioned EME. Also, if you expose or repose the blessed sacrament for any reason you ought to be commissioned as well. Very rarely do individuals lead a communion service without a priest or deacon at St. Als; but, in this event too, the one leading the prayer ought to be commissioned as an EME. Anywho feel called to help out in this way are encouraged to volunteer through a phone call to the parish office.
Altar Server
Altar Servers assist the priest and deacon at the altar during a liturgy. At St. Als the tradition of having our Junior High and High School students act as altar servers has been followed. We also have a few adults who serve when called upon too. If you would like to minister in the parish as a server please call the parish office to volunteer. All students in our school are automatically given an opportunity to do this.
Usher
Ushers help people find seats when the church is full, take care of collecting the offertory gifts and securing them in the church’s safe, come to the aid of people who may be sick, and answer any questions that might arise. At. St. Als the tradition of having middle-aged and older men act as ushers has been followed. But, this ministry isn’t age or gender specific. So, if you feel called to embrace this ministry please call the parish office to volunteer.
