"As participants in one of the educational missions of the Parish, we, the administration and staff of St. Aloysius School of Springfield, Illinois, are called to be Christian, professional educators. Our primary task is to foster the Catholic development of each child. We are to help every student grow spiritually, intellectually, physically, emotionally and socially. In collaboration with the parents, we endeavor to instill in each child Catholic Christian values that promote respect and concern for, as well as service to, others."
Our community benefits from the efforts of St. Aloysius School, especially since the city’s main industry is service. As a capital city, Springfield’s main industries are government, health care, retail and insurance. The values taught at St. Aloysius provide a work force that compliments the goals of these industries. Service to the church, school and community are an integral part of the curriculum. To live one's faith by helping and sharing one’s talents is encouraged by the Catholic-Christian values taught daily. Teachers strive to instill a sense of responsibility toward family, church, school and community in many ways. Students pick up litter on the school grounds, help clean the lunchroom, assist teachers with learning centers and paperwork, correspond with elderly parishioners through the Pals from St. Al’s program, decorate valentines for veterans and communicate with the Parish’s seminarians. They construct posters for right-to-life, help neighbors with chores, volunteer at the Mini O’Bierne Crisis Nursery Center, purchase and wrap gifts for senior citizens, serve at Mass, volunteer as patrols and greeters, baby-sit, read to younger students and provide recess supervision. The students truly "reach out" to help others.
Service to humankind is instilled in the many graduates of St. Aloysius. The many volunteers who join the numerous service organizations like the Knights of Columbus, Kiwanis, Jaycees, etc., learn these values at St. Aloysius. Service to this community is reflected in the numerous law enforcement officers and firefighters who live in our neighborhoods, go to our church and send their children to St. Aloysius Grade School. It is no coincidence that these professions are staffed with our graduates, engaged in serving and protecting the greater community.
The community also benefits from the many nurses and skilled laborers who have grown up in the Northend. Nurses who serve those in need chose this profession after learning these values at St. Aloysius School.
At the present time our faculty numbers fourteen. Three of these teachers are St. Aloysius School alumni.
The labor traditions which started in the Northend provided skilled workers. A weary but proud work force returned home at night from the Starnes, Devereaux Heights, and Jones & Adams coal mines, factories such as Weaver’s, Illinois Watch Company, Sangamo Electric and Pillsbury Mills, and area railroads.
This rich labor tradition continues today with the many construction and trade union parishioners who are also raising and educating children in the Northend.
